Job Description

As our Chaplain, you will nurture the spiritual, ethical and pastoral life of our Anglican organisation while walking alongside people experiencing homelessness, mental ill-health and complex life challenges......

  • Live your Anglican faith through presence, compassion and courage
  • A calling to serve people at the margins — ordination not required
  • Shape hearts, culture and mission in a values-led organisation

An Anglican chaplaincy role for a grounded, compassionate presence — walking alongside vulnerable people and live faith through action.

At St Bart’s, we believe chaplaincy is a ministry of presence — grounded in faith, shaped by compassion, and lived out alongside people in their most vulnerable moments.

As our Chaplain, you will nurture the spiritual, ethical and pastoral life of our Anglican organisation while walking alongside people experiencing homelessness, mental ill-health and complex life challenges. This is a role for someone who feels genuinely called to serve — someone who is steady, deeply pastoral, and able to hold hope, dignity and faith in spaces where life can feel fragile and raw.

You do not need to be ordained to apply. We warmly welcome applications from lay Anglicans and those with recognised pastoral formation who feel called to this ministry.

Through prayer, conversation, ritual and presence, you will help create spaces of reflection, belonging and renewal — supporting individuals spiritually while strengthening the mission and culture of St Bart’s as a whole.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide compassionate, trauma-aware pastoral and spiritual care to consumers and families when requested, in a way that reflects Anglican values and is inclusive of all faiths and none.
  • Offer a calm, grounded presence within a dynamic service environment, engaging respectfully with people living with significant disadvantage.
  • Plan and lead worship, memorials and significant occasions, in collaboration with clergy where appropriate.
  • Work closely with frontline teams, responding to referrals and ensuring thoughtful, consistent pastoral follow-up.
  • Participate in an on-call ministry within organisational capacity.
  • Support and help grow our volunteer chaplaincy program in partnership with the Volunteer Manager.

You will be well suited to this role if you bring:

  • Formal training in theology, pastoral care or chaplaincy (or a willingness to continue formation).
  • Experience in pastoral ministry or spiritually informed care within complex or vulnerable community settings.
  • A mature, grounded outlook within the Anglican faith, with the ability to engage generously across difference.
  • Emotional resilience, sound judgement and the ability to offer steady pastoral care in challenging situations.
  • An understanding that chaplaincy strengthens not only individuals, but the mission, culture and sustainability of the organisation.

What we offer:

  • Pay: Competitive salary, plus NFP salary packaging giving you the potential to gain $15,900 in tax benefits
  • Leave: 23 days annual leave, that’s 3 days more than the standard 4 weeks
  • Perks: Lots of social activities, expand your experience by joining a consultation committee, and walk alongside with the people we exist to support
  • Hours: 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Career development: Training, accessible leaders, growth and advancement opportunities
  • Culture: Exceptional workplace culture – we work hard and have fun while we do it
