Job Description

Primary role in staff leadership, strategic planning, leadership development, ministry oversight, operation oversight, teaching and preaching, and church-wide leadership, with a role as acting youth and young adults pastor (one position). This role is for a two-year fixed term, at full time (1.0 FTE) (.8 FTE Negotiated).

The Pastor (Pastor of Ministry Development) at Coromandel Valley Uniting Church exists to strengthen the church’s mission by providing strategic leadership, developing staff and volunteers, and overseeing ministries and systems that help people grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. Working alongside the Minister of the Word, this role will ensure the church is well-led, healthy and equipped to fulfill its vision of connecting families and individuals from the wider community to God and one another.

The Acting Youth and Young Adults component will take 0.5 of this role until such time when the church calls a separate Youth/Young Adults Pastor.

Key Responsibilities

The Pastor of Ministry Development will lead the strategic planning that facilitates the fulfillment of church's vision as collectively discerned by the Eldership and Senior Leadership, and champion the vision within the staff and ministries, ensuring that all plans are aligned with the mission. They will take a primary role in staff leadership, strategic planning, leadership development, ministry oversight, operation oversight, teaching and preaching, and church-wide leadership.

As acting Youth/Young Adults Pastor they will identify, train, appoint and mentor Christ-like leaders among the youth and young adults (Y/YA) at CoroUniting, assist Y/YA leadership teams in discerning from the Holy Spirit and the provision of pastoral care of youth and young adults, and advocate for the full participation of Y&YA into the whole life of CoroUniting Church.

Person Specification

The Pastor of Ministry Development will be a person who exhibits the following characteristics:

  1. A mature Christian who is deeply committed to Jesus Christ, open to the power and direction of the Holy Spirit, whose life is characterised by the fruit of the Spirit (cf. Galatians 5:22-23).
  2. A deep and genuine desire to see people discover a faith in Jesus Christ and to become mature disciples of Jesus
  3. A highly developed devotional life
  4. A love for people and cohesive community.
  5. Alert to matters of justice and the confidence in the gospel’s power for change.
  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  7. An energetic “self starter”, keen to initiate and develop ministry
  8. An ability to delegate ministry effectively
  9. An ability to work under the leadership of Church council with the Minister of the Word.
  10. An ability to work cooperatively with other staff members in a team ministry

They will have:

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in Bible, Theology, or Christian Ministry (essential)
  • Wholeheartedly adopt the vision, purpose, philosophy, and goals of the CoroUniting Church
  • An ability to develop others in their gifts.
  • Highly developed skills in coordination and communication.
  • Highly developed skills in organisation and planning on a personal level and in the work context
  • An active membership (or will become an active member) with the Uniting Church
  • Commitment to the Uniting Church ethos.

Applicants must have

  • A proven ability in leadership within a church context
  • A proven ability to lead congregational worship
  • A proven ability to preach effectively
  • A history of pastoral care skills

The successful applicant will be a member of the Uniting Church (or in the process of becoming one), and will be subject to the Uniting Church in Australia Code of Ethics and Ministry Practice and will be required to undergo training in application of this code. They will be required to have completed a course of study on the Heritage, Theology and Polity of the Uniting Church within 12 months of appointment. The successful applicant will be required to hold and maintain all required screenings during the period of this contract, and will to be commissioned into this role near the commencement of their role.
