We are seeking to appoint a highly effective and aspirational educator who is ready to grow into a leadership role within the HSIE faculty.

Position Summary

The Assistant Head of HSIE is an emerging leader within the faculty who supports the Head of Faculty in fostering a culture of excellence in teaching and learning. Working collaboratively with colleagues, the Assistant Head contributes to the design, implementation and refinement of high-quality curriculum, assessment and pedagogical practices that enhance student learning and achievement.

The role combines highly effective classroom practice with developing leadership capacity, including supporting colleagues through collaboration, modelling best practice, and contributing to faculty-wide improvement initiatives. The Assistant Head of HSIE plays a key role in ensuring consistency, quality and innovation across teaching programs, while actively promoting the College’s vision, mission and values.

Reports to: Head of Faculty

Status and Hours: Full Time - Permanent position
Student supervision hours are 8 am – 3.30 pm, although an understanding is required that the role will require greater hours than this, including attendance at weekly staff meetings and other after-hours events.

Major Responsibilities

The Assistant Head of HSIE is a developing instructional leader who supports the Head of Faculty in strengthening teaching practice, curriculum quality and student outcomes across the HSIE learning area. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Model highly effective classroom practice and contribute to a culture of excellence in teaching and learning across the faculty
• Assist in developing, implementing, and reviewing scope and sequences, programs, and assessments aligned to NESA syllabuses (History, Geography, Commerce, and electives).
• Support the development of curriculum documentation that reflects contemporary pedagogy, differentiation, and alignment with the College’s teaching and learning framework
• Support colleagues through collaborative planning, professional dialogue and the sharing of evidence-informed pedagogical approaches
• Promote the intentional integration of literacy, numeracy and cross-curricular priorities within HSIE programs
• Assist in monitoring the quality and consistency of teaching practice through peer observation, program review and student performance data
• Support staff in identifying and responding to the learning needs of students, including extension, learning support and wellbeing considerations
• Contribute to the effective induction and development of new HSIE staff, supporting their understanding of College expectations, systems and teaching practices, and fostering their confidence as members of the faculty
• Support the Head of Faculty in the smooth and strategic operation of the HSIE faculty, contributing to organisation, timetabling input, resource deployment and the effective use of learning spaces.
• Assist in the stewardship of faculty resources, including contributing to budget planning, resource selection and the ongoing organisation and maintenance of teaching materials and equipment
• Support the planning and delivery of faculty initiatives, including excursions, events and co-curricular opportunities, ensuring they are purposeful, well-organised and aligned with learning outcomes

Professional and Personal Attributes

We are seeking an outstanding classroom practitioner who is ready to take the next step into leadership. This role is ideally suited to an educator who is eager to grow their influence beyond their own classroom and contribute meaningfully to the development of colleagues, curriculum and student outcomes within the HSIE faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• A committed Christian, actively involved in a church community, with a desire to contribute to the Christ-centred mission and life of the College
• Appropriate tertiary qualifications and NESA accreditation to teach Stage 4–6 HSIE
• Deep knowledge of relevant syllabus documents, with the demonstrated ability to design and deliver high-quality, contemporary teaching and learning programs that engage students and improve outcomes, including the use of explicit instruction, inquiry-based learning and the development of critical thinking
• A sound understanding of assessment as, of and for learning, and the ability to design effective assessment practices that inform teaching and support student growth
• The effective and purposeful use of technology to enhance teaching and learning
• A collaborative and relational approach, with the ability to build trust and work alongside colleagues to strengthen teaching practice and student outcomes
• Strong organisational and interpersonal skills, enabling effective contribution to both classroom excellence and the smooth operation of the faculty
• The capacity to model effective teaching practice and positively influence others through encouragement, feedback and professional dialogue
• A genuine commitment to student learning, wellbeing and holistic development within a Christ-centred educational framework
• A willingness to contribute to the co-curricular life of the College and broader school community
• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills
• A reflective and growth-oriented mindset, with an ongoing commitment to professional learning and leadership development

Desirable Criteria

• A familiarity with Growth Mindset, Habits of Mind, and Visible Thinking / Cultures of Thinking which underpin our Learning Power Approach to teaching and learning.
• Understanding and experience in use of restorative practices within a student wellbeing framework.

Salary: In accordance with the Independent Schools (Teachers) Cooperative Multi-Enterprise Agreement 2025 or future approved agreement.
