Commencing July 2026, Wesley Mission is growing its GambleAware services, extending our reach across Blue Mountains & Western Sydney, Central Sydney, South West Sydney, and North Sydney & Central Coast. This expansion reflects our longstanding commitment to harm reduction and ensures more individuals, families and communities can access timely, high-quality support for gambling related harm.

About the program

GambleAware program delivers a stepped, multimodal and person-centred approach to supporting individuals, families and communities affected by gambling harm. Our work spans early intervention, therapeutic counselling, community engagement and education—focused not only on responding to harm, but also on reducing stigma, strengthening community capacity and increasing help seeking.

We work collaboratively with local services, community partners and stakeholders to create accessible pathways to care and ensure support is responsive, culturally informed and grounded in best practice harm reduction principles.

About the role

As part of our growing GambleAware team, you will contribute to delivering high‑quality, compassionate support to people experiencing gambling‑related harm or who are at risk of harm

Working within a multidisciplinary team, Our Gambling Counsellors will be expected to :

  • Provide therapeutic counselling sessions, through evidence informed, person-centred practice
  • Promote harm reduction, recovery and wellbeing
  • Conduct comprehensive intake assessments and risk assessments in line with clinical governance requirements
  • Provide face to face, phone and digital counselling in line with funding requirements and clinical practice
  • Strengthen community awareness and reducing stigma around gambling harm through a variety of outreach and community engagement initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to ensure seamless access to support

 

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent in Counselling or Psychology
  • Understanding and development in co-mobilities, addictions and/or gambling counselling
  • an understanding and knowledge of problem gambling issues, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health, grief and loss
  • demonstrated skills & experience of a broad range of therapeutic approaches when working with individuals, couples and families.
  • experience in community networking and building relationships to raise awareness
  • membership of professional association (i.e. ACA, APS, PACFA)
  • demonstrate highly developed communication skills in written and oral situations, with supportive & positive attitude toward all persons for whom there is responsibility, accountability or care
  • computer literacy
  • excellent time management, multi-tasking and follow-up skills
  • willingness to affirm Wesley Mission’s vision, mission and values
  • current NSW driver’s license
  • current Working with Children’s Check.
  • Police checks and clearances

Desirable Criteria

  • experience and training in addictions and/or gambling counselling
  • experience in developing, facilitating and running support groups and Psychoeducation groups
  • ability to work some evenings or Saturday
