Job Description

St Columbs Hawthorn is seeking and Allrounder/Barista to join our new outreach project/cafe called The Prodigal Hub.

The focus of the Allrounder/Barista role is to ensure we provide great coffee, quality food service and offer a friendly welcoming experience to everyone coming to the Hub. This outreach hub, located in the café space at St Columbs Anglican Church, Hawthorn, seeks to draw in the community through hospitality, events and building relationships where people feel welcome and experience love. This role reports to the Hub Coordinator. This is a 15 hours per week role on Wed/Thu/Fri.

The person we are seeking for this roll needs to be able to Ensure we serve great coffee by:

    1. Ensuring coffee machine and food service area is cleaned and sanitised before and after shift and set up for optimal operation
    2. Instructing and coaching volunteer staff helping with coffee and food service in how to make a great coffee, and proper food service hygiene and safety practices
    3. Provide barista duties and food service with volunteer staff and hub coordinator
    4. Ensure milk and coffee supplies at the food service area are stored properly and topped up as needed during shifts and at the end of each shift ready for the next day service, and support ordering and food prep as required
    5. Ensure food storage, display and service meet safe hygiene standards and that volunteers operate according to safe practice and the agreed protocols
    6. Ensure record keeping on temperature checks, safety and hygiene practices, food monitoring, and volunteer food service practice is completed each day
    7. Identify any problems with process or equipment or safety practices and report these to Hub Coordinator
    8. Ensure food storage meets required criteria, undertaking and coaching volunteers in cleaning and sanitising protocols for the kitchen, café space and food service area, and support the Hub Coordinator in ensuring health and safety compliance so that registration requirements are maintained
    9. Communicate effectively with volunteers, other staff and customers, contributing to a welcoming, generous, friendly and collaborative environment and culture, offering welcome and kindness without discrimination.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year hospitality industry experience.
  • Barista training certificate desirable, experience mandatory
  • Food handling certificate (or to be completed)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Willing to learn record keeping and reporting requirements and to coach volunteers in coffee making.
  • Willing to undertake ‘Food Safety Supervisor’ certification
